Purpose & Philosophy

Sunbeams Preschool is here to provide a warm, loving atmosphere in which children may play, socialize and participate in experiences that meet the developmental stages of early childhood. Our philosophy is that each child has a unique personality and will be treated as a special individual. The small teacher/student ratio allows that personalized treatment. Our purpose is to serve families in our church and community, offering them a comfortable atmosphere for their child’s growth and natural learning experiences.

A Christ-Centered Environment

Especially during your child’s impressionable years, this kind of surrounding means so much. Here your child will learn to love, accept, help and forgive others because Christ first loved and forgave them. At Sunbeams Preschool, children are encouraged to develop their God-given talents in a secure atmosphere of love and acceptance.

What We Offer

Sunbeam’s preschool offers a wide variety of learning activities for children. We have a 10:1 student/teacher ratio. Our curriculum is thematic and correlates with a letter of the alphabet. Children must be 3 before August 1 to attend the 2-day program, or 4 before August 1 to attend the 3-day program. We provide either AM (8:45-11:30) or PM (12:30-3:15) options.  Parents’ Day Out can be added to the other half of the day to make a preschool day a full-day option.

Sunbeams will begin each day with an arrival activity. This occurs at the table and usually consists of some sort of small motor activity such as cutting, tracing, or even working with play dough. Following arrival, students move to the circle time area.

During circle time, the Pledge of Allegiance is said, counting and number recognition is practiced during calendar time and songs are sung. In addition, themes are introduced and discussed, as well as the letter of the week. When introducing letters, we teach the Jolly Phonics system, which incorporates a sound and an action with each letter.

Following Circle Time, students break up into groups of two and rotate around the room to different centers. There are five centers each day that children will have the opportunity to explore. These centers include writing, math (counting, patterning, sorting), blocks and puzzles, and dramatic play. One of the centers each day will be table time where the teacher will work individually with students on specific skills. Centers are child-led, giving children the opportunity to learn to work together. The teacher acts as a guide and a helper during centers. The majority of the preschool day is Center Time.

When center rotations are complete, students clean up and gather at the table for snack. Snacks are provided by the parents throughout the year. During snack time, a prayer is sung before eating. The teacher will share a Bible Story with the students while they eat their snack.

The last portion of the day in the classroom is Second Circle. During this time the teacher will discuss the Bible Story that was read as well as tie up any loose ends from the day. Backpacks are then loaded and children line up for free play, which is the last 20 or 30 minutes of the day and takes place either outside on our playground or in our gym.

Children must be completely toilet trained to attend Sunbeams Preschool (pull-ups are not allowed).
