At PWUMC, we are dedicated to providing a nurturing, inviting and safe environment for your child. Whether it’s small groups, Vacation Bible School, childcare, children’s arts or any other activity, we strive to present God’s love to each and every child. We have a number of ministries especially geared to children.
Crib & Toddler Rooms
Children younger than 2 are cared for in our crib nursery or toddler rooms filled with music, story time, and interactive play.
Two year-olds through preschool are invited to explore God’s Word in an interactive and engaging way at both 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Circle time, music, crafts and games are often a part of their experience.
Elementary Students/Kid Central & Route 45
Kid Central: K-3rd Grade
On Sunday mornings all K-3rd graders are invited to Kid Central (9:15 & 10:45) in room 113 for GPS, a large group activity where we Gather, Pray and Sing in a worship setting. Following GPS, students will continue to explore God’s Word and grow in their faith with their grade-level friends in their Sunday School class rooms.
Route 45: Grades 4 & 5
On Sunday mornings all 4th & 5th graders are invited to gather in room 159 (9:15 & 10:45) for a junior youth group version of GPS followed by exploration of God’s Word and life application.
The Pure Joy Special Needs Ministry has a small group Sundays at 9:15 a.m. A Full Plan of Care Form or Quick Care Form is available to help us begin a conversation with families/guardians. Please plan to arrive early on your first Sunday.
The Good News Company
The Good News Company is a choir for children in grades 1-5. This choir is specifically designed for children who are excited to learn challenging songs, music theory and how to be a part of the worship leadership experience. Choir participants will need to be present at rehearsals and able to perform at periodic worship services and community events. Rehearsals are each Sunday morning from 8:15-9:00 in the Music Suite. Co-directors are Gail Krause and Bridget Coughlin. For more information, please contact Bridget .
For the safety of the children in our care, we require a registration form for all children attending events at PWUMC. To fill out a form for your child(ren) prior to arriving, please print our Children’s Reg Form 2018-2019.

Purpose and Philosophy
Sunbeams Preschool is here to provide a warm, loving atmosphere in which children may play, socialize and participate in experiences that meet the developmental stages of early childhood. Our philosophy is that each child has a unique personality and will be treated as a special individual. The small teacher/student ratio allows that personalized treatment. Our purpose is to serve families in our church and community, offering them a comfortable atmosphere for their child’s growth and natural learning experiences.
A Christ-Centered Environment
Especially during your child’s impressionable years, this kind of surrounding means so much. Here your child will learn to love, accept, help and forgive others because Christ first loved and forgave them. At Sunbeams Preschool, children are encouraged to develop their God-given talents in a secure atmosphere of love and acceptance.
What We Offer
We believe in helping children experience all areas of development so that they may be better prepared for their elementary school experience. We provide children an opportunity to learn about cooperation, manners, sharing, social skills, listening and following instructions in a nurturing Christian environment. A day’s activities could include fitness time or music; special “theme” days; exposure to letters, numbers and colors; project time; and just plain having fun. Our teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 10. Children must be fully toilet trained (no pull-ups) to attend Sunbeams Preschool.

The Platte Woods United Methodist Church PDO program is in its 50th year of providing quality childcare to children ages 6 weeks to pre-K. The PDO program fits the needs of children of various ages. From our nursery care through pre-K, you can be assured that your child will receive care in a professional, clean environment. As your child grows, the educational opportunities at PDO increase. During the mornings, teachers share in crafts, reading and other fun learning exercises with their students. Afternoons are spent in free play, allowing children to have fun and develop their social skills.
Besides offering professional childcare in a comfortable, age-appropriate and clean environment, PDO offers something many daycares cannot: flexibility. The PDO program does not require commitments for particular periods of time: instead, your child can attend whenever it fits into your schedule. Need to run errands, volunteer at an older child’s school, or just have some “alone” time? Drop your child off that morning (no reservations required, except in the nursery) and know that while you’re accomplishing your goals, your child is well cared for and having a great time. PDO is a state-inspected facility. For more information about PDO, please email or call Jennifer Carrizzo (816-741-2006).
2018-2019 School Year Schedule & Fees
During the school year, PDO is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day, with full- and partial-day schedules available. An extended care program before and after regular PDO hours is also available. Preregistration is required for extended care: please contact Jennifer Carrizzo or Sue Arensberg for more information. Parents can sign up for extended care at the beginning of each semester depending on available space.
Cost is full day — $28; 9 a.m.-noon — $19; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. — $22.
Payment is required upon arrival and check-in. We ask that you pay with exact cash or by check (made out to PDO). Late fees apply for children picked up after the close of PDO at 3 p.m. Prepayment options are also available.
PDO will be closed on the following days during the 2018-19 school year: September 3, September 28, October 12, October 25 & 26, November 21-23, December 21-January 2, January 21, February 18, March 15-22, April 19, April 22
The nursery accepts infants age 6 weeks to 12 months old. Reservations are required for this room. To make your reservation, please call 816-285-0820 during business hours.
Children in the 2-year-old room and younger take naps at 1 p.m. All napping children will be provided with nap cots, but will need to bring a crib or twin sheet and blanket each day.
All children in the 3-year-old class must be toilet trained within a month of turning 3.
Because we care deeply about the welfare and safety of every child and youth who participate in the programs and ministries provided by PWUMC, we take seriously our responsibility to do everything in our power to see that no physical, emotional or sexual abuse occurs in any ministry setting sponsored by PWUMC. We recognize every person as a child of God who is created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, we have a strong commitment to make the church a safe place for children and youth. Supervision policies and procedures are in place.
The PWUMC “Because We Care” policy includes having all adult volunteers screened and registered.
