“It’s the Most Extroverted Time of the Year”

One of the biggest struggles all families face this time of year is to honor the energy of both, the introverts and extroverts in the family. Some couples I’ve worked with have fights over parties and gatherings without realizing one of them is actually an introvert that needs time home alone or simply one-on-one with their partner rather than spending all their energy on social gatherings.

I think the most difficult thing to understand is that socializing takes energy for introverts. I know of introverts, including myself, who get physically sick when their energy is too far drained from participating in social events. They lose focus, have difficulty completing simple tasks, and their immune systems become vulnerable.

My favorite resource for understanding the difference between introverts and extroverts is the book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” by Susan Cain. It’s a wonderful balance of research and stories to help the reader understand the world from the point of view of an introvert.

My second favorite is a simple cartoon book called “Introvert Doodles” by Maureen “Marzi” Wilson. Other than how much she loves cats, that could be me!

So, to help my fellow introverts out, I’ve reworked the lyrics to a popular Christmas tune in a way that might explain to family members what is really needed! Have fun with this. And I hope everyone can plan for this Christmas season in a manner that honors whichever you are: Introvert or Extrovert!

It’s the most extroverted time of the year.
If you happen to be shy
You don’t have to say why
Just tell them all “NO!”
It’s the most extroverted time of the year.

It’s the most outgoing season of fun.
Go enjoy socializing
For you that’s energizing
With me it’s one-on-one
It’s the most outgoing season of fun

Your parties are cheerful
But I’ve had an earful
I just need some time to myself.
I’m not really complaining
But my energy’s draining
Let me be the elf on the shelf!

It’s the most extroverted time of the year.
If you happen to be shy
You don’t have to say why
Just tell them all “NO!”
It’s the most extroverted time of the year.
