Dr. Tex Sample will lead the class as they study John Wesley’s reading of the Bible. The first two sessions will be devoted to the ways John Wesley interpreted the Bible. The second two sessions will examine Wesley’s reading of scripture in the light of contemporary interpretations. The purpose of the class is to provide participants an acquaintance with Wesley’s interpretation of scripture and also with an introduction to something of what is going on today in the reading of the biblical text. We will use examples of Wesley’s approach to scripture as a way of making the matter of interpretation concrete and applicable to our own issues: specifically, his challenge of the Calvinists on predestination, his use of women in the work and preaching of the church, his lifelong opposition to slavery, and his mission with the poor.
